Goleiros trabalham

Roberto bateu colocado, e a bola passou raspando a trave.

Wolves make first move to sign "dominant" new £17m Kilman replacement

Still looking to replace Max Kilman late on in the transfer window, Wolverhampton Wanderers have now reportedly held talks to sign a defensive reinforcement for Gary O'Neil.

Wolves transfer news

The Midlands club started their summer by losing Kilman to West Ham United in a deal reportedly worth £40m and have ended it by losing Pedro Neto to Chelsea for a reported £54m. Yet, even after such hefty sales, Wolves' transfer budget remains insignificant amid their pursuits of a defensive reinforcement and the loan arrival of Aaron Ramsdale.

In an attempt to offer Ramsdale a way out of what has become a nightmare spell at Arsenal, Wolves reportedly submitted a loan with an option to buy offer to the Gunners in a deal that would see those in the Midlands cover the majority of his wages. As things stand, however, it remains to be seen whether the north London club will accept their proposal.

The same can be said for another option, too. According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Wolves have held talks with Sheffield United to sign Anel Ahmedhodzic alongside West Ham United, though it is Ipswich Town who reportedly lead the race for the centre-back's signature.

Talks held: Wolves could repeat Gomes masterclass with £30m "monster"

Man United are also interested in this talent…

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 23, 2024

It would add insult to injury if the Hammers were to beat Wolves to Ahmedhodzic, having already taken one of their star men – albeit for a decent chunk of money. They have also brought in Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice on a loan deal, so Wolves are certainly in most need of a new centre-back at present.

And despite Ipswich apparently leading the race, anything could still change late on in the window, with the 25-year-old certainly ticking plenty of boxes in Wolves' search to replace Kilman. Perhaps most importantly, the Sheffield United man has a release clause worth £17m, which fits into Wolves' reported £20m budget left to spend before deadline day in under a week's time.

"Dominant" Ahmedhodzic could replace Kilman

Having reportedly held talks, Wolves should do everything in their power to jump ahead of Ipswich in the race to sign Ahmedhodzic in the remaining days of the summer transfer window. Summing up his quality, analyst Ben Mattinson was recently full of praise for the central defender amid his links to the Tractor Boys, claiming that Ahmedhodzic would be a "dominant" dueller alongside Jacob Greaves.

With just days remaining in the transfer window, Wolves must ensure that they replace both Neto and Kilman before the likes of Ipswich use their recruitment to cause some upsets in the Premier League this season.

Sheffield United's Anel Ahmedhodzic

At 25 years old, Ahmedhodzic represents an option who is on course to get even better with a move back into the top flight, and those in the Midlands should be the ones benefiting given his valuation and ability to slot straight into O'Neil's backline.

Warwickshire show resilience against champions Essex on day of low-key high standards

Tailenders show fight as Siddle takes three in first outing for a month at Edgbaston

George Dobell23-Apr-2021Warwickshire 243 for 8 (Lamb 47, Siddle 3-52) trail Essex
295 (Browne 68, Walter 66, ten Doeschate 56, Stone 4-89, Hannon-Dalby 4-73) by 52 runs
It was not, perhaps, the sort of day you would recall forever. There were no especially large innings or remarkable bowling returns. The run-rate – around 2.4 an over – was, by modern standards, pretty sedate. But in terms of providing the tough, uncompromising environment which is required to provide players with the experience required to succeed at Test level, this was a fine advert for the virtues of County Championship cricket.By the end of it, Essex’s relentless attack had earned them the upper hand. On a surface that is, perhaps, a little drier than might have been expected at this time of year, Simon Harmer’s off-spin could prove a handful in the fourth innings. With the seamers having gone round the wicket to left-handers at times throughout the game, there is rough outside the right-handers’ off stump which may prove crucial. But Essex are not in the overwhelmingly dominant position they might have been. And with Warwickshire having pulled off an impressive run-chase in their last game against Durham, both sides will know there is nothing inevitable about the course of this match. That Warwickshire remain in the hunt was, in no small part, down to a ninth-wicket stand between Danny Briggs and Craig Miles. Coming together with Warwickshire still trailling by 102 runs, they have so far resisted for 28 overs in adding 50 runs and inching their side towards parity. There was nothing especially clever in their method. It was founded on patience, a sound defence and accumulation when the opportunity arose. Miles has yet to hit a boundary in his 85-ball innings and, while Briggs heaved a six over the short leg-side boundary when Sam Cook dropped short, it was very much the aberration.Essex also put down three chances of varying difficulty in the field. Firstly, Harmer dropped Rob Yates, on 3, in the slips off the deserving Jamie Porter, before then missing a sharp caught-and-bowled chance offered by Hanuma Vihari on 25. Later an edge from Tim Bresnan, then on 10, flew between Harmer and Alastair Cook in the slips.Warwickshire were unable to take advantage, though. Yates was bowled through the gate as he pushed forward hopefully, before Vihari, who had looked ominously comfortable, was caught behind off a fine delivery which may have left him a fraction. Bresnan, who received his county cap from former England team-mate Ian Bell before play, was bowled when he attempted to drive an off-break which turned sharply out of the rough.Ahead of that ninth-wicket stand, Warwickshire’s most resolute batting came from Sam Hain and Matt Lamb. But Hain was defeated by a beauty which dipped and turned sharply, before Lamb was bowled by one from Peter Siddle which nipped in sharply.Related

Siddle was not, perhaps, quite at his best. Playing his first game for a month, there were one or two more loose balls than usual at the start of his spell. But, having settled, there were also some high-quality deliveries. He complements this nagging fast-medium attack beautifully. It’s an attack which lacks, perhaps, the pace you might see at Test level. But in terms of sustained pressure, in terms of offering a balance of seam, swing and spin, and on a pitch that offers a really good balance between bat and ball, this was a day when you could very much see the value of the competition.”I was disappointed with our first innings, I thought we were probably 50 or 70 short,” Essex head coach Anthony McGrath said afterwards. “But the bowlers were absolutely magnificent. It is quite a slow wicket, but we chipped away all day and they never got away from us. We will bowl far worse than that and bowl teams out.”At 193 for 8, Warwickshire were in real trouble. But Miles and Briggs have kept their side’s heads above water and sustained the resilience demonstrated at Trent Bridge last night. It is a characteristic that pleased their captain, Will Rhodes.”It feels like we’re making progress,” Rhodes told ESPNcricinfo afterwards. “In the past, we’d go behind in games and fall away. But, as you saw at Trent Bridge last week, we’ve some fighters in that dressing room who are prepared to scrap their way back into the game.”Yes, we’re probably slightly behind the eight-ball in this game. But we were last week, too, and we know how that finished. I want us to be hard to beat and I’m really pleased to see us scrapping like this.”

According to , Puyol addressed the widespread comparisons being made between Messi and Yamal, who have both shone for Barca at a young age after emerging from the club's prestigious La Masia academy. The retired Spanish defender, who made almost 600 appearances for the club, said it was unfair to burden Yamal with super high expectations.

Admittedly, it's hard not to get carried away with Yamal. As well as playing a starring role in Spain's triumphant Euro 2024 campaign at the tender age of 17, the highly intelligent and technical winger also recently won Tuttosport's Golden Boy award after registering five goals and nine assists in his 15 La Liga appearances in 2024/25. He's a remarkably talented player and given his exquisite playmaking ability, you can see where the Messi comparisons have come from.

WHAT PUYOL SAID

The 46-year-old former World Cup winner urged people not to put too much pressure on Yamal, saying: "If we put the label of Leo on him. The pressure is already maximum. What Leo has done and continues to do is incredible and it will be very difficult to see a player like that again."

Chelsea hold talks to sign £153k-p/w star in swap deal for Raheem Sterling

As they look to end the summer transfer window with a bang, Chelsea have reportedly held talks over a potential swap deal that would see Raheem Sterling head for the exit door.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues have once again stolen the headlines this summer, welcoming the likes of Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall alongside several other fresh faces in an attempt to finally turn a corner back towards the Premier League's top four. Even after already splashing the cash on Neto, however, those at Stamford Bridge seemingly have their sights set on another attacking boost.

The latest to arrive, Neto told Chelsea's official website: "I feel really grateful to have joined this club. I have worked really hard in my career to be here and I’m looking forward to getting on the pitch with this shirt."

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers man could take the place of Sterling in Chelsea's starting side, with the former Manchester City star potentially on the move before the transfer window slams shut.

According to Sky Sports' Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea have held talks with Juventus over a swap deal to sign Federico Chiesa in a move that would see Sterling head in the other direction.

Discussions over that deal didn't take long to reach a conclusion, however, with the Italian giants put off by Sterling's hefty £325,000-a-week salary. The Chelsea man earns over double Chiesa, who is reportedly on £153,000-a-week at Juventus.

That said, given that Chiesa has been frozen out of Thiago Motta's Juventus side and shown the door in Italy, the winger is likely to be on the move in the next two weeks. Whether that ends with a summer switch to Chelsea remains to be seen, however.

Chelsea don't need "fantastic" Chiesa

After just splashing the cash to sign Neto, signing Chiesa could be one winger too many at Chelsea, even if it could have been argued that was the case before the Portugal international arrived.

The Juventus winger has struggled in recent years too, with injuries playing a large part in his progress coming to a crashing halt. The last thing that the Blues need in their current state is a player hoping to rediscover his form amid fitness issues.

federico-chiesa-trent-liverpool-transfer-news-premier-league

There was once a time when Chiesa wouldn't be struggling for a move; Europe's top clubs would have been queuing up for his signature after Euro 2020. Alas, those days, for now, are behind him.

Rio Ferdinand was among those full of praise for the Italian after his performance at Euro 2020, helping his country to tournament victory. The Manchester United legend said via The Metro: "He’s a huge player and he’s been linked with a few clubs in England. I’m sure they’re thinking ‘why didn’t we get him?’.

"He’s just a fantastic footballer. The intensity with which he plays with, we saw in the Euros he was the main goal threat for the Italians who went on to win the tournament."

Travis Head: Australia selectors have been 'ultra-clear' about Test role

Sussex overseas signing yet to speak to Justin Langer since central contract omission

Matt Roller04-May-2021Travis Head is yet to speak to Justin Langer after his surprise omission from Australia’s central contracts list two weeks ago, but says that the channel of communication with selectors Trevor Hohns and George Bailey has been “ultra-clear” regarding his standing within the national squads.Head was dropped two Tests into Australia’s home series defeat to India, but finished the Sheffield Shield season as the competition’s second-highest run-scorer and had been named in the squad for the aborted tour to South Africa. With a respectable average of 39.75 after 19 Tests, he remains in contention for the 2021-22 Ashes series, and hopes to prove his worth during a season-long stint playing county cricket for Sussex, with his debut likely to arrive on Thursday against Northamptonshire.”It was disappointing not to be on there, but from the standpoint of where we need to be and what Australian cricket wants and expects, they want guys contributing in international cricket and winning games for Australia,” Head said. “When I had my opportunity, I wasn’t able to do that. It was great to go home and play really well in domestic cricket but at the end of the day, when I get my opportunity, I need to be able to take that in international cricket.Related

“It would have been difficult to be at home, having two months off going into pre-season, and having that over my head, [but] I get a great opportunity to have an impact at Sussex and make as many runs as possible. That’s the currency. I’ve done it domestically in Australia, and hopefully that can hold me in good stead for the summer.”Head found out about his omission from the central contracts list while on a camping trip in rural South Australia with his fiancée’s family, with his lack of phone signal or internet access inadvertently forcing Cricket Australia to delay the announcement. He has not yet had the opportunity to speak to Langer, Australia’s head coach, but said that he expects to do so in the coming days.Travis Head lost his Australia central contract in April 2021•Getty Images

“It’s been a bit hectic over the last little bit but I’ve had so many conversations with JL, with George Bailey and with Trevor Hohns,” Head said. “I know the messaging, which is ultra-clear – there are no mixed messages whatsoever. I’m really comfortable with that, and know the expectation of what I need to do.”We’ll get the opportunity to chat but it won’t be about dwelling on it – it’ll be about moving forward and asking what needs to be done over the next six months to be ready to go [for the Ashes]. Those conversations have always been had and I’m pretty clear on that. It’d be great to have a chat at some point but at the end of the day, I’m here playing cricket, and I get the opportunity to score as many runs as possible.”This year is third time lucky for Head at Sussex: he had been lined up for a stint in 2019 but was unable to fulfil it after his inclusion in Australia’s Ashes squad, and his contract was deferred last summer due to the pandemic. Jason Gillespie, his South Australia and Adelaide Strikers coach who initially recruited him, is no longer at the county, but Head said that he intended to “settle down” and make Sussex a home away from home following previous stints with Worcestershire and Yorkshire. His contract covers all formats, and he stated his intentions to play “as much as I possibly can” in white-ball cricket despite the competition for places: counties are permitted to register three overseas players simultaneously but can only field two in a playing XI, and Sussex have signed both Rashid Khan and David Wiese specifically for the T20 Blast.Head had a prolific Sheffield Shield season for South Australia•Getty Images

“Keith [Greenfield, director of cricket] and I will sit down over the next couple of days,” he said. “We’ve spoken about looking at the schedule and when I would or wouldn’t play, but from my side, I’m here to play cricket, win games for Sussex and help create a culture of success. It’s always been a really strong [T20] team so I’m looking forward to getting in there and whacking it around.”Head’s arrival should bolster an inexperienced batting line-up that has missed the injured Phil Salt early in the season. Sussex are third in Group Three of the County Championship after four matches, but have let strong positions slip in their last two fixtures, at home to Yorkshire and Lancashire, resulting in a significant gap between the top two and the rest of the group.”I’ve kept a very close eye on it,” Head said. “[The Shield] was my best season, personally, and it was consistent – as a cricketer and as a batter, that’s what I want to be. I made a couple of changes to my technique and it’s always nice when that works. I’ve had a couple of weeks off but had a hit before I left and everything felt in good order.”

Worse than Tavernier: 3/10 Rangers man was "not good enough"

Glasgow Rangers once again failed to step up when they needed to in the Old Firm as they were beaten 3-0 at Parkhead in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

Head coach Philippe Clement has now lost four and drawn one of his five encounters with Celtic since he arrived at the club last year, which illustrates the gulf between the two sides at this time.

Goals from Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi put the hosts in control in the first half, before Callum McGregor struck, via a deflection from Dujon Sterling, a third from distance in the second 45.

It was a terrible afternoon for the Gers across Glasgow and, in particular, for captain James Tavernier, who struggled once again in the Old Firm.

James Tavernier's struggles

The English full-back made the worst possible start to a league meeting between the two sides in April when his slow clearance rebounded off Maeda to give Celtic the lead inside one minute back in April.

This time, it took until the 17th minute for the Japan international to make the most of Tavernier's lacklustre defensive work, as he stole a march on the defender to nip across him and fire in the opener from Alistair Johnston's pull-back.

Tavernier did make three tackles and two interceptions during the match and won seven of his 13 duels, but that did not make up for his critical error for Maeda's opener.

The skipper was also fortunate not to see a positional mistake pounced upon when Nicolas Kuhn weaved a pass through to find Reo Hatate in acres of space where Tavernier should have been, only for the midfielder to fire high and wide from six yards out.

Cyriel Dessers' Old Firm issue

Cyriel Dessers, who was handed a match rating of 3/10 by GlasgowWorld's Lewis Anderson, was criticised by former Gers striker Billy Dodds on BBC Sportsound, as the ex-forward said that the Nigeria international's efforts were "not good enough".

He was even worse than Tavernier, who at least created three chances and one 'big chance' for his teammates, as the attacker struggled in and out of possession.

The former Cremonese number nine has now scored one goal in six appearances against Celtic in the Old Firm clashes, whilst Kyogo has managed eight goals in 15 games against Rangers. That illustrates the difference in quality between the strikers of the two sides.

As you can see in the table above, Dessers made little impact at the top end of the pitch, with zero goals and only one chance created, and was dominated off the ball.

Tavernier, at least, created one 'big chance' for the team and looked to make things happen in the final third, whereas, the striker offered very little.

Dessers was also a lightweight when Rangers needed him to hold the ball up and alleviate pressure, as he lost a whopping seven of his nine duels, and these statistics show that he was nowhere near good enough in or out of possession.
