Mott hits right notes with Buttler as coach lifts second World Cup at the MCG

For the second time in less than three years, Matthew Mott held a World Cup aloft at the MCG.In March 2020, it was the history-making performance of Australia’s women’s team, in front of 86,174 spectators, and a few days ago the England men’s team became the first male side to hold both World Cups at the same time to forge their own legacy.”It hasn’t fully sunk in yet,” Mott told ESPNcricinfo on Tuesday. “It was an amazing event, again. I probably never thought I’d coach either team, really, so to coach them both to a trophy is something very special.”Mott’s time with Australia came to end after their ODI World Cup victory in New Zealand as they, too, were able to unite the two pieces of limited-overs silverware. He was interviewed for the Australia men’s position when Justin Langer was forced out, but that was always going to Andrew McDonald (do not be surprised, though, if it’s Mott’s job in the future).Matthew Mott’s shift to England came after leading Australia to T20 and ODI World Cup wins•ICC/Getty Images

The time was right to bring an end to a storied run with Meg Lanning’s team and England’s interest was impossible to ignore. But even though he was moving into another set-up that had enjoyed white-ball success, had immense depth and were going to be one of the tournament favourites, a lot had to go right to win a World Cup at the first time of asking, particularly after things had gone wrong. While Australia’s title in 2020 and this one for England have not quite followed the same path, they both became fraught affairs. Australia were beaten by India in their opening match and couldn’t afford another defeat; England’s loss to Ireland at the MCG left them in a similar position. There were also injuries to contend with, both before and during the event. In 2020, Tayla Vlaeminck was ruled out on the eve of the tournament, as Reece Topley was this time. Australia lost Ellyse Perry at a vital time; England were without Mark Wood and Dawid Malan in the semi-final and final. Both teams had the depth to come through.”They are interesting tournaments,” Mott said. “There’s so much that can go right or wrong. Run rate is such a big thing that’s looming. To get out of a very strong group, there was a lot of relief after that. Once you get to the semi-finals and finals you play a slightly different brand of cricket, you can actually relax a little more. Think the team thrives on that.”Matthew Mott celebrates with the side after England clinched the trophy•PA Photos/Getty Images

“I think England’s depth is incredible. If you look at all the players who missed out in that team – Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Reece Topley – and even the quality that was still sat on the bench, David Willey has done nothing wrong at all and we couldn’t squeeze him in.”Probably the most pleasing thing – everyone talks a lot about the batting – but with Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, Mark Wood, there’s now incredible depth in the bowling. Thought Adil Rashid had an amazing tournament. Think the way we adapted was key. In tournaments like this you will always lose a couple of players, but if you don’t panic and give other players an opportunity it really adds to the group.”Mott only started working with England in June on a short tour of Netherlands which ended with Eoin Morgan’s retirement from international cricket. Mott sensed it could be coming, but it still meant there was an entirely new captain-coach axis as Jos Buttler took over four months before the World Cup. The home summer was a stuttering affair as three of the four series against India and South Africa were lost.Related

However, things started to come together in Pakistan, even though Buttler wasn’t playing. Mott pinpointed that trip as vital to what has played out in Australia, lauding Buttler’s decision to go on the tour. Their relationship was strengthened while Mott also believes the development of Buttler’s captaincy was aided by watching Moeen Ali.”Any time with a captain-coach relationship it takes time to build that trust,” Mott said. “I hadn’t really known Jos before I was in this role. Like any good working relationship, you have to build trust in each other. I really felt the best thing for us was when Jos selflessly said he’d come to Pakistan even though he wasn’t going to play.”He just wanted to observe and his relationship with Moeen Ali was strengthened over there, it was a brilliant. That really set the tone for us, to build a team around him. He observed a lot from Moeen’s captaincy and [I] think he took a lot out of that. He added an extra layer of calmness and assuredness.”In 2020, the destiny of the title had been all but decided by the batting of Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney. Mott subsequently said he was even able to give himself a moment to soak in the experience that day. This time it was rather different, a tense affair that was only really decided when Shaheen Afridi limped off and Ben Stokes seized the moment.Mott caught up with a number of the Australians over the last few weeks and many of them sent him messages before the final. “Felt like in a strange way they shared in that even though it was England,” he said. “At least they had someone to cheer for in the final.”

Arsenal rejected world-class CF for just £7m, now he’s worth more than Saka

There is no escaping it: this season is turning into a nightmare for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side are a distant second in the Premier League, out of the FA Cup and League Cup and in the midst of an injury crisis, so while there is still a chance that they could lift the Champions League come June, it’s an incredibly distant one.

Kai Havertz is the latest player to suffer a hamstring injury and is set to be out for the rest of the season, meaning that the manager will be without what is arguably his first-choice frontline, as Gabriel Martinelli, and Bukayo Saka are both sidelined as well.

This recent bombshell makes the club’s decision not to sign anyone last month look particularly puzzling.

That said, they’re no strangers to getting things wrong in the winter window, especially as a player they could have picked up for cheap in January 2019 but refused to work out a deal for the summer prior is now worth millions more than Havertz and Saka.

Arsenal's 2019 winter transfers

So, while Arsenal decided against signing a player who’d go on to be worth a king’s ransom, it must have been because they were splashing the cash on someone to help strengthen the first team for new boss Unai Emery, right?

Well, as fans will probably remember, that was very much not the case, as aside from promoting Eddie Nketiah to the first team, the only signing the Gunners made in January 2019 was Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez, who joined on loan.

However, it gets worse, as the Spaniard would make just six appearances for the club, totalling 95 minutes, in which he failed to score or assist a goal, later revealing that he was only 50% fit during his time in the capital.

In short, Suarez’s stint with Arsenal was nothing short of a disaster and yet another example of the club failing to do adequate business in January, made worse only by the fact they missed the chance to sign a future megastar who moved for a bargain fee that same summer.

The megastar Arsenal missed out on

Arsenal have missed out on their fair share of superstars in the past, with plenty of stories detailing how they could have signed the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimović, Kylian Mbappé or Cristiano Ronaldo, but in this instance, it’s a superstar who is still terrorising them today.

According to former Molde scout John Vik, the Gunners were one of a few top teams who could have got their hands on Erling Haaland before he made his £7m move to RB Salzburg in January 2019.

Vik explains that “Arsenal could have got him,” but like so many of the other Premier League sides interested at the time, they simply saw the Norwegian prospect as a big target man.

Unfortunately, the Gunners’ hierarchy has since been proven very wrong, as the Leeds-born phenomenon has been utterly sensational for every club he’s played for.

For example, he racked up a tally of 29 goals and seven assists in 27 games for Salzburg, 86 goals and 23 assists in 89 games for Borussia Dortmund, and currently has a staggering 117 goals and 16 assists in 132 games for Manchester City.

Moreover, the “prolific” centre-forward, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has made a real habit out of scoring against Arteta’s side, racking up four goals and two assists in eight games, although only three of those have ended in victory for him.

Such an incredibly upward trajectory has understandably impacted his valuation, with Transfermarkt now valuing him at a whopping €200m, which is about £167m.

For context, Transfermarkt values Saka at €150m and Havertz at €75m, which converts to about £125m and £63m, respectively.

Ultimately, Arsenal are no strangers to missing out on talented players – it happens to all top teams – but considering their own striker problems at the moment and the way he’s constantly scored against them, missing out on Haaland might sting just that little bit more.

Forget Idah: Celtic can find the next Kyogo by handing Celtic star new role

And so, it’s finally over. That gloriously fruitful Celtic and Kyogo Furuhashi relationship has come to an end, with the Japanese sensation embarking for pastures new at Ligue 1 outfit, Rennes.

Having been mooted as a potential target for Premier League champions, Manchester City, over the summer, an exit for the former Vissel Kobe striker did appear inevitable at some stage, with his return of 85 goals in 165 games at Parkhead having unsurprisingly not gone unnoticed.

That said, to have allowed the 30-year-old to depart mid-season – and to a struggling French side, no less – is a decision that will continue to come under scrutiny, not least as the Hoops prepare for a Champions League playoff tie against Bayern Munich next week.

The Old Firm giants did at least manage to rake in a £10m fee for a player who had cost them just £4.6m back in the summer of 2021, yet after spending £8m of those funds on Jota’s homecoming – alongside bringing in Jeffrey Schlupp on loan – no further permanent moves were made before the window slammed shut.

Celtic's failed pursuit of a striker

To have allowed the window to come and go without replacing Kyogo is a puzzling move for the Parkhead hierarchy to have made, with club legend Chris Sutton having stated that Brendan Rodgers and co were in need of a “top class centre forward” as the deadline drew closer.

There may be wisdom in avoiding overpaying or rushing into a panic buy, with the summer window not too far away, yet having likely been aware of Kyogo’s desire to depart for months, it is difficult to understand why an adequate successor was not lined up.

It had looked at one stage that the Hoops were pushing on in an attempt to revive their interest in former target, Mathis Kvistgaarden, albeit with Brondby holding firm over their desire not to sell the 22-year-old marksman.

The Danish striker has been in red-hot form this season with 14 goals in all competitions, ensuring he could have been a worthy, long-term rival for Adam Idah in the Celtic ranks.

That pursuit was also followed by apparent interest in Sevilla’s Kelechi Iheanacho – whom Rodgers had worked with at Leicester City – although the Nigerian ultimately signed on the dotted line for Middlesbrough, with the Scottish champions left empty-handed.

While Rodgers does have £9.5m man, Idah, to call upon – as well as ex-Shamrock Rovers loanee, Johnny Kenny – the Northern Irishman may need to get creative to find his new Kyogo over the coming months.

The Celtic star who could replace Kyogo

With just six Premiership goals to his name this season – and 11 in all competitions – Idah hasn’t quite picked up where he left off last time around, scoring nine times in just 19 games after initially signing on loan from Norwich City.

His recent brace against Aston Villa in the Champions League has further outlined his potential, but if Rodgers is looking to find a striker in the mould of Kyogo, then perhaps Daizen Maeda is the man.

With Jota able to slot in on the left flank, while Nicolas Kuhn remains on the opposite side, deploying Maeda through the middle may be the perfect solution to fitting all three attackers into the starting lineup.

Stats via Transfermarkt

The 22-cap Japan international has rarely featured in that central berth for Celtic, although – as indicated above – it has worked wonders when he has done so, with ten goal involvements in just 11 outings as the number nine, according to Transfermarkt.

Chalkboard

Equally, the 27-year-old has regularly operated ahead of Kyogo in that role for his country, having been hailed as “an absolute livewire” by pundit Rio Ferdinand at the 2022 World Cup.

Also lauded as a “one-man closing down machine” by Sutton in the past, the relentless forward is the perfect option to lead the press as the spearhead of the attack, mimicking his compatriot in never giving a defender a moment’s peace.

What also gives Maeda an advantage over Idah is just how prolific he has been already this season, having scored 16 times – while registering eight assists – in all competitions.

There may be the issue of why should the former Yokohama man be relocated if he is already thriving, yet with Jota now back in the picture, that new look attack could truly wreak havoc on the rest of the Premiership.

Idah, it must be said, offers a great focal point and physical presence at 6 foot 3, yet if it is a Kyogo replacement Rodgers is after, then Maeda may well be the perfect in-house solution.

According to despite Liverpool’s efforts to secure his future with a lucrative package that would have placed him among the highest-earning full-backs in the world, Alexander-Arnold made up his mind to leave the Merseyside club. It is believed that the defender has already struck an agreement with Real Madrid and might even move to the Spanish capital before the Club World Cup commences in June.

Liverpool tabled a generous contract proposal, demonstrating their desire to retain Alexander-Arnold. However, the Reds were informed earlier this year that the defender had no plans to extend his deal, which is set to expire at the end of the season. The club ultimately accepted his position and began preparing for his departure. Last month, Alexander-Arnold personally notified Slot of his intention to leave, closing the chapter on one of the club’s most successful youth-to-first-team journeys in recent history.

DID YOU KNOW?

Replacing a full-back with Alexander-Arnold’s unique skillset – capable of operating both as a playmaker and a defender – will be no easy task. It has been suggested that Conor Bradley is being viewed as a direct replacement of the 26-year-old, whereas Fulham star Antonee Robinson is also being monitored as a potential summer addition, although he is a left-back.

A product of the club’s academy, Alexander-Arnold played an instrumental role in the Reds’ recent trophy haul, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Club World Cup. Now, with just three games potentially left in a Liverpool shirt, the countdown to his farewell has begun. The Merseyside club face Arsenal at Anfield this Sunday, and that will be followed by encounters against Brighton and Crystal Palace.

Arsenal offered £302k-per-week Zubimendi alternative who’d cost just £29m

Arsenal have been contacted by agents who’ve offered Mikel Arteta the possibility of signing an alternative to Martin Zubimendi this summer.

Martin Zubimendi in advanced pre-summer talks to join Arsenal

Back in January, The Mail broke the news that Arsenal began attempting a pre-summer deal for Zubimendi, with it gaining serious traction among credible media sources like Fabrizio Romano.

However, while Arsenal’s talks to sign Zubimendi are believed to be at an advanced stage, with personal terms loosely agreed over wages (Ben Jacobs), there is still every chance that a rival club could swoop in to hijack the deal.

This was echoed by Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg last month, who poured cold water over suggestions that an agreement for the Spain international was all but done – adding that Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool are also in the mix.

Arsenal plan to trigger Zubimendi’s £51m release clause, according to Romano, so the final sign-off on this transfer will rest solely on the boyhood Sociedad fan’s shoulders.

The 25-year-old is known to have rejected a move to the Premier League before, snubbing Liverpool’s advances last summer (Sky Sports), and there is nothing to suggest that it wouldn’t happen to Arteta’s side as well.

Arsenal offered Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong

Taking this into account, it would be wise for interim Arsenal sporting director Jason Ayto to consider alternatives, with a move for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong potentially on the table.

According to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, intermediaries have contacted Arsenal to gauge their interest in signing de Jong from Barca, with the £302,000-per-week midfielder not exactly enjoying his best campaign at Camp Nou due to injury problems and a lack of form.

Manchester United transfer target Frenkie de Jong in action for Barcelona.

The Netherlands international is out of contract in 2026, meaning he could also depart for a cheap fee, which some reports estimate could be as low as £29 million.

De Jong was a top target for ex-Man United boss Erik ten Hag during his time at Old Trafford, and it appears a move to England could still be possible for the 27-year-old.

“Frenkie is an incredible player and for every club in the whole world he will strengthen the squad because he has a unique quality,” said Ten Hag, who worked with De Jong at Ajax (ESPN).

“If you can get him in the squad your team will be stronger. In Spain, he became even better. He’s a fantastic player, plays out from the back, he always has time, and it was a pleasure to work with him.”

The French team are just two points off second-placed Marseille but may need to win both their last two games to make it into Europe's top football competition next term. Aside from that, this shows how these sides' American owners and trying to use their nous to work the rules in their favour.

'We're going to back you to the core' – Hardik Pandya's message to his young T20I team

Stand-in captain says India are not out to settle any scores with Sri Lanka after the Asia Cup loss last year

Vishal Dikshit02-Jan-20233:08

‘No bigger new year resolution than winning the World Cup’

Looking ahead to the 2024 World Cup and standing in as T20I captain for three games against Sri Lanka for now, Hardik Pandya’s message to his young team is clear: “go out there and express [yourself], we’re going to back you to the core.”Hardik takes over captaincy in the absence of regular leader Rohit Sharma, who will take back captaincy for the ODIs. Even though it’s not clear yet who India’s captain at the next T20 World Cup will be, Hardik assessed India’s situation in T20s by saying that there was nothing wrong with their approach in the lead-up to the tournament.India had adopted a new approach in the format when Rohit took over captaincy and Rahul Dravid became the new head coach: they started getting much quicker off the blocks in the powerplay, Rohit himself changed his approach at the top, and most of India’s batters were batting with an intent of scoring faster. Except that in Australia, the bounce and pace was not to India’s liking, and they went back to their old template of setting a base and then building on it.Related

“You see, I think before the [T20] World Cup, I don’t think we did anything wrong,” Hardik said in Mumbai, a day before the series opener against Sri Lanka. “Our template, approach, everything was the same. Yes, in the World Cup, things did not go how we wanted. And I think our approach was not the same – what it was before the World Cup. What we have noticed and told the boys is that just go out there and express [yourself], which they will do. And it’s up to us that how we back them.”What we have said is that we’re going to back you to the core. All the players have that support from my side that I’m going to back them to the core. Who are here, these are the best cricketers in the country, that’s the reason they are here. So, I have to make them believe that, which is a fact as well. For me, it’s important that how can I make them feel that they’re the best of their business. And if I can get that thing done, and can get that confidence in them, then I don’t think that they will have any problem in international cricket. I think they will flourish and have amazing careers ahead.”Hardik echoed Rohit’s words from a year before the 2022 World Cup when he and Dravid had given their players “assurance of going out and expressing” themselves. With the next T20 World Cup only a year and a half away, Hardik did not go into the team’s plans in detail but said there was not much time to experiment for now as there are only six T20Is before IPL 2023.Watch on ESPN Player in the UK

“Obviously, the plans are set. We are looking to play in a certain way, which we will,” Hardik said without elaborating. “Before IPL only six games are there, so we don’t have much time to do a lot of things but going forward we will keep creating new plans and see which are the plans which are working for us. And going forward just make sure everyone gets ample opportunities and just that on the right time when needed just see what we need to do.”Being the hosts and 3-0 winners of the last time these two teams played a bilateral T20I series – in early 2022 in India – Hardik implied they had an upper hand in home conditions, and wasn’t looking to settle any kind of score after their loss to eventual champions Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup.”No, we’re not looking to settle anything [after the Asia Cup loss],” Hardik said with a smile. “We want to play good cricket. Yes, we will make them feel like we’re in India, don’t worry about that, I assure and promise you they will feel that they’re playing an international team and that too India in India. So from my boys and my side, we’re going to be clear. We don’t need to go and sledge them, our body language is enough for them to feel a little intimidated which we will do, I promise you.”India will field a new-look squad with Suryakumar Yadav the vice-captain in T20Is, and several senior players either unavailable or rested. Three uncapped players – Rahul Tripathi, Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar – also have a chance to make their international debuts.

Rahul picks up hand injury – 'hopefully he'll be okay,' says Rathour

India could be without both their first-choice openers in the second Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka, with KL Rahul taking a blow to his hand while batting in the nets on the eve of the match. While India batting coach Vikram Rathour indicated on Wednesday that Rahul’s injury wasn’t serious, he did not confirm whether he is certain to start the match.”It doesn’t [look serious],” Rathour said in his pre-match press conference. “He seems to be fine. Hopefully he’ll be okay. The doctors are looking at it, but hopefully he’ll be okay.”Rathour, incidentally, was delivering throwdowns to Rahul when he took the blow to his hand towards the end of his nets session. He was seen rubbing the injured area, and was attended to by the team doctor.Rahul is also India’s captain in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who missed the first Test in Chattogram and was also ruled out of the Dhaka Test, having failed to recover fully from a thumb injury that he picked up during the ODI series that preceded the Tests. If Rahul is unavailable on Thursday, vice-captain Cheteshwar Pujara will likely take over the captaincy. Rahul’s place at the top of the order, meanwhile, could go to a debutant in Abhimanyu Easwaran, who initially came into the squad as Rohit’s standby.Abhimanyu’s selection came on the back of a prolific India A tour of Bangladesh. Having just come off a 50-overs century for Bengal against Services in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Abhimanyu made back-to-back hundreds in the four-day games against Bangladesh A in Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet. The blow to Rahul’s hand is the latest in a series of injuries India have suffered in recent weeks.Jasprit Bumrah is a long-term absentee with a stress fracture of the back, while as many as seven players were ruled out of the ODI series at various points – including first-choice Test players Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami.India lost that ODI series 2-1, and lead the two-Test series 1-0 after a 188-run win in Chattogram.
