Value’s soared: Everton hit jackpot with star who’s worth more than Ndiaye

One player who has benefitted greatly from David Moyes’ return to Everton for a second spell at Goodison Park is Portuguese centre-forward Beto.

The former Udinese marksman only scored four goals in 42 Premier League appearances for Sean Dyche in his 18 months under the ex-Burnley manager.

However, he has already found the back of the net four times in five matches for the Scottish boss, including a goal in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool earlier this month.

That has propelled him to second in the club’s top-scorers list in the Premier League, only behind Iliman Ndiaye – who arrived from Marseille last summer.

Iliman Ndiaye's form this season

Everton swooped to sign the Senegal international from the Ligue 1 giants for a reported fee of £15m ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch.

The 24-year-old maestro’s form for the Toffees this season suggests that he has been a terrific addition to the squad, as he has proven himself to be a big threat at the top end of the pitch.

Ndiaye has scored six goals from an xG of just 3.58 in the Premier League for the Blues, which shows that he has been ruthless with the chances that have come his way, whilst the attacker has also created two ‘big chances’ for his teammates.

Market Movers

Everton appear to have struck gold with the former Sheffield United man, given that he is their top scorer this season, but the Toffees have also hit the jackpot with a star who is worth even more than the £15m that was paid for Ndiaye – Vitalii Mykolenko.

Vitalli Mykolenko's soaring value

The Ukraine international joined from Dynamo Kyiv in the January transfer window in 2021 and was valued at £14m by Transfermarkt at the time of his move – less than Ndiaye is currently worth.

He has racked up 110 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees to date, including 98 in the Premier League, and has become a solid option at left-back.

In the 2024/25 campaign, Mykolenko has started all 23 of his top-flight appearances for Everton and ranks second in the squad for interceptions per game (1.2), whilst he has also won 57% of his duels in the league – showing that he can hold his own in physical battles.

As you can see in the table above, the 25-year-old defender’s value has soared by millions throughout his time at Goodison Park so far and is currently at a whopping £23m – £8m more than the club paid for Ndiaye last summer.

This shows that the Toffees hit the jackpot when they signed Mykolenko back at the start of 2022 because they landed a promising full-back who has been a regular in the team in recent years, whilst also being an increasingly valuable asset who could be sold on in the future.

Hopefully, Mykolenko can continue to impress under Moyes and continue to prove that the Toffees hit the jackpot by signing the Ukraine international, due to his ability on the pitch and his soaring market value off it.

Richa, Harmanpreet seal comfortable win after Deepti three-for

India chase down 119 with 11 balls to spare to hand West Indies a 15th consecutive T20I defeat

A strangling spell of 3 for 15 with drift and turn from Deepti Sharma set up India’s comfortable six-wicket win against West Indies on a slow Newlands surface in slightly overcast and very windy conditions. India’s second win in a row was more convincing than the one against Pakistan as they chased down a modest 119 with 11 balls to spare to remain second on the Group 2 table behind England, who are also unbeaten and will be India’s next opponent, on Saturday in Gqeberha. The deflating loss was West Indies’ 15th straight in the format and their eighth in a row against India, leaving them fourth on the table. They opted to bat again but never got going because India effectively used as many as five spinners and allowed West Indies’ run rate to touch six only once in the innings. India’s teenage hard hitters Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh played crucial hands in reply with their trademark display of boundaries, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur chaperoned the chase nearly till the end with a patient 33.Is Matthews Vastrakar’s bunny?Hayley Matthews might be pleased with the fact that she and Pooja Vastrakar will be Mumbai Indians team-mates at the WPL. Vastrakar’s first ball in the second over got extra bounce to get Matthews’ outside edge for just 2 to brag of a one-sided record against the West Indies captain: four dismissals in 17 balls for a mere 10 runs. Being their best batter on form, the dismissal hurt West Indies before Shemaine Campbelle and Stafanie Taylor took Rajeshwari Gayakwad for 12 in the fifth over to lift the run rate slightly, finishing the powerplay on 29 for 1.Stafanie Taylor stretchered off the field

Stafanie Taylor, playing in her second match this year after a long injury layoff, batted with increasing fluency, and said at the innings break that she was not yet ready to return to bowling. She fielded for eight overs and then pulled up with what seemed to be a recurrence of the back injury that kept her out for a year and a half since July 2021. She went down at short fine leg and tried to get back up but stalled in her lunge. She then lay on her back and was eventually stretchered off the field, with an ambulance waiting to take her for medical assessment. Shakera Selman, at the post-match press conference, said losing Taylor was a blow because West Indies rely heavily on her experience.

The spin squeeze and the fifty partnershipHarmanpreet brought on spinners from both ends with Deepti, Shafali, Radha Yadav and Gayakwad bowling five in a row that yielded 26 runs around Taylor and Campbelle’s fifty stand. Taylor still looked scratchy and ate up 20 dots in her 40-ball stay on her return from a long injury layoff whereas Campbelle used her feet and the sweep to collect runs. Deepti was the best in that phase with her loopy deliveries in a first spell of 2-0-8-0.And just when Taylor started to open up with boundaries against Gayakwad and Renuka Singh in consecutive overs, and Campbelle smacked Vastrakar over her head to stretch the scoring rate towards six, Deepti returned to remove both set batters in a double-wicket over. Campbelle reverse swept to short third where Smriti Mandhana dived forward for a sharp low catch with both hands and Taylor was trapped lbw for 42 when she moved across to a straight delivery and India used a review to get the on-field decision overturned. Two balls later, Chinelle Henry wanted a second run with a fumble from backward point but the quick throw from Mandhana found her short for her second run-out in as many games, and West Indies were in trouble.Deepti tops the chartsChedean Nation and Shabika Gajnabi steered West Indies from 79 for 4, especially helped by Deepti giving Nation a life on 3 by putting down a chance at long-off. The duo collected a boundary each in the 17th over to make the team score touch 100 before Gajnabi fetched a lucky boundary with a thick inside edge in an over full of yorkers from Vastrakar. Deepti returned in the last over and got to 100 T20I wickets by rattling Afy Fletcher’s middle stump. She now has the most wickets by an India player, across men or women, and with a four-run over finished with 3 for 15.A minor stutter before Ghosh’s finishing touchesAfter chasing down 150 against Pakistan on the same ground, 119 was hardly going to trouble India, especially with Mandhana back in the XI. She struck back-to-back fours before being stumped in the fourth over off Karishma Ramharack for 11, and Jemimah Rodrigues slapped one back for a superb return catch by Matthews in the next over, giving the West Indies spinners some hope of making a game out of it.India were, however, already going at over seven an over because Shafali had started off by blasting three fours in the first four balls of the chase. The first had timing, the second power, and the third the pace of using hard hands as the edge flew over first slip. She swung Ramharack for one too, on the leg side in the last over of the powerplay, before holing out against her with a sweep to long leg.Harmanpreet blocked the good balls patiently but also tore into the attack when they erred. With protection on leg for her sweeps, she unleashed back-to-back boundaries off Afy Fletcher; a caress through the covers was followed by a powerful loft over the same region. With 55 required from 60 and the experienced captain at the other end, Ghosh freed her arms with powerful pulls, and smashed three fours in the space of five balls to seal the game.

Everton have a "monster" who could be Moyes' new Rooney & it's not Beto

David Moyes arrived, and Beto stepped up.

Years of disappointment were washed away as the Scottish manager returned and restored Everton’s feel-good factor, narrowly losing his debut against Aston Villa but since taking the club on a seven-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, winning four.

Beto has been brilliant, clinching five goals from his past six matches. Hailed for his “resurgence” by The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland, Moyes has unlocked the powerful striker’s quality and then some.

Everton manager David Moyes andBetoafter the match

With the ailing Dominic Calvert-Lewin approaching the end of his contract, Beto has the chance to throw down the gauntlet and challenge Everton’s 21st-century strikers for the top spot.

However, that would take some doing. Oftentimes, Romelu Lukaku was an unstoppable force at Goodison Park, and the Guinea-Bissau international would need quite the impact over the coming years to topple Wayne Rooney’s legacy.

Rooney's time under Moyes at Everton

It’s just not going to happen. No disrespect to Beto, but Rooney is one of the finest players of his generation, a five-time Premier League champion with Manchester United and one of the most prodigious teenagers in history when emerging at Everton.

Wayne Rooney playing for Everton

Moyes was the man who ushered him through to the senior stage. Handed his senior debut in a 2-2 Premier League draw against Tottenham Hotspur in August 2002, a 16-year-old Rooney claimed an assist for Mark Pembridge, setting the stage for the most illustrious of careers.

However, two months later the teenage sensation truly announced himself with a thunderous goal against Arsenal, his first in the Premier League. It was late, it was great and it ended the Gunners’ 30-match unbeaten run.

He hit six goals across the 2002/03 campaign and settled into a more prominent role the next term, Moyes reaping the rewards of his young talent, who fired in nine goals from 26 starting appearances. His exploits piqued Sir Alex Ferguson’s interest – and that was that.

In August 2004, Manchester United signed Rooney, 18, from Everton in a deal worth £27m. Ferguson hailed the transfer, calling Rooney “the best young player this country has seen in the past 30 years.”

Moyes and his former protégé’s relationship soured after the sale. The Everton manager wanted Rooney to stay put, but he was arrested by the Red Devils’ approach and pushed for a departure.

The one-time Three Lions record scorer bowed out behind only Alan Shearer in the all-time Premier League scoring charts. Harry Kane has since overtaken him on both accounts but Rooney’s legacy is firmly intact.

He ended up returning to Everton, and finished his career with 117 Toffees appearances. However, the wide span of his prime years were played at the Theatre of Dreams, and now Moyes faces the risk of lightning striking twice with his next version of Rooney.

Clue; it’s not Beto.

Moyes' new Rooney at Everton

There’s just something about Moyes. He has that innate managerial gift to bring the best out of his players, giving rise to priceless self-belief.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

And though players like Beto are benefitting from this convergence, Moyes might actually find his new version of Rooney in Jarrad Branthwaite – who was already riding the crest of a personal wave before the Scottish manager arrived.

Everton signed Branthwaite, then 17, from Carlisle United in January 2020 for a small £1m fee, and he’s proved a bona fide success.

Now 22 years old, the 6 foot 5 star has been described as an “absolute monster” of a defender by talent scout Jacek Kulig, playing crucial roles in the Toffees’ first-team efforts over the past two years after a loan spell in Holland with PSV Eindhoven.

He’s operating at a high level and could now go from strength to strength with Moyes in the dugout. Everton’s progress in such a short time means, hopefully, the overall level will rise and solidify, allowing Branthwaite to foster his skills without the weight of a relegation battle on his back.

A young talent who has been regarded as a “pretty special” talent from the offing, as said here by Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher, could find themselves becoming a genuine Premier League superstar with Moyes at the wheel, Branthwaite indeed following Rooney’s path.

This comes with a caveat. How far down that road will Branthwaite walk?

Last summer, the England international, like a young Rooney, was at the centre of a transfer saga involving Manchester United, who had a vested interest in Everton’s Players’ Player of the Season for 2023/24 and launched a series of bids over to Merseyside.

Everton stood firm on their £75m valuation, something United were unable to match, but then Everton know their talent’s worth, know he’s among the top bracket of defenders.

But the interest is genuine and Branthwaite may follow Rooney’s footsteps down the line, with the record English league champions reportedly willing to reignite their long-standing interest.

Either way, Everton have extracted wonderful levels from this rising defensive star, and if he were to leave for Old Trafford, Moyes’ side would claim hefty recompense.

Branthwaite’s got the potential to become one of the leading centre-halves of his generation, and though he wasn’t born in Liverpool, he’s cut his teeth with Everton and now finds himself on United’s radar and under Moyes’ wing.

There are similarities, and though Everton could bank quite the pretty penny through his sale, maybe they’ll seek to change this narrative and keep Branthwaite as the defensive nucleus over the coming years.

Everton are on the up, and if they do keep such a player, it sends a firm statement of intent to the rest of the division – and maybe even over to the rest of the continent. We can dream.

Mikel Merino, Dean Huijsen and the top 10 Premier League signings of the 2024-25 season – ranked

With the campaign almost wrapped up, GOAL runs down the new arrivals who have made the biggest impact in the English top flight

Premier League clubs invested over £2 billion ($2.7bn) in new players across the two transfer windows of the 2024-25 campaign as England once again proved to be the No.1 destination for the top talents on the continent. However, many of those teams have not seen their marquee signings live up to their hefty price tags and sterling reputations.

Some have flopped spectacularly, while others are yet to prove they can deliver consistently. Joao Felix and Jadon Sancho both fall into the first camp at Chelsea, Manchester United's Dutch duo Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt sit firmly in the second, and the less said about Federico Chiesa's first year at Liverpool after his summer move from Juventus, the better.

But it's not only the super clubs who have made costly missteps. Niclas Fullkrug and Eddie Nketiah have been major disappointments at West Ham and Crystal Palace, respectively, with plenty of others having offered very little to the collective cause.

There have also been a host of disastrous loan deals, including Kalvin Phillips to Ipswich Town and Raheem Sterling to Arsenal, but the top-flight recruitment over the last 12 months hasn't been bad. A few of the big-money additions are now established stars at their new homes, and this has been one of the best years for shrewd business in the recent history of the English top flight.

Real value has been found in unexpected places; a refreshing change in an era that has typically seen the richest clubs dominate. With all that in mind, GOAL has ranked the top 10 signings of the season…

    10Omar Marmoush (Manchester City) – £59m

Omar Marmoush is the only January signing to earn a spot on this list, which is testament to how quickly the Egyptian striker has settled into his new surroundings at Etihad Stadium. The 26-year-old has successfully transferred his prolific form in the first half of the season at Eintracht Frankfurt to Manchester City, scoring seven goals in his first 15 Premier League appearances, including a stunning hat-trick in a 4-0 rout of Newcastle.

In the long term, Marmoush will be City's replacement for Julian Alvarez given his ability to play in multiple attacking positions and penchant for exploiting the half-spaces, but he's proven he can lead the line effectively, too, in the injury-enforced absence of Erling Haaland. It also bodes well that Marmoush has performed at such a high level despite City suffering a serious drop-off as a collective, which has been noted by Pep Guardiola.

"He arrived in the middle of the season and in a moment when we are not good," the City boss said in April. "Sometimes when you come when everything is fluid and everything is fine it’s easy to adapt. But coming when the team is not playing good, that is a big credit." It's safe to say we can expect great things from Marmoush next season – just don't mention the FA Cup final!

    9Evanilson (Bournemouth) – £40m

Bournemouth broke their transfer record to sign Evanilson after seeing Dominic Solanke depart for Tottenham, and the former Porto striker has since done a fine job of filling the England international's boots. The Brazilian has scored a respectable 10 league goals for the Cherries to date, but that number would surely have been higher had he not been sidelined with a broken foot for the first two months of 2025.

Evanilson has been in superb form since returning to full fitness, netting five times in nine starts, including Bournemouth's late winner at Arsenal. Andoni Iraola has pulled off yet another impressive recruitment win with Evanlison, who is a fine finisher and target man capable of spearheading the Cherries' attack for years to come.

"He is a top-class striker. He knows where the back of the net is and is going to get goals," former West Ham and Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker told Football Daily' podcast after watching Evanilson shine at the Emirates. "Great movement in the box, a great natural finisher and old-school striker. He's just gone from strength to strength since coming to Bournemouth."

Evanilson is certainly one of the main reasons Bournemouth have a chance of cracking the Premier League's top 10, and he will surely now have one eye on a Brazil call-up for the 2026 World Cup.

  • Getty Images Sport

    8Ismaila Sarr (Crystal Palace) – £13m

Ismaila Sarr didn't exactly light up the Premier League when he was at Watford, but it was clear that the Senegal international had plenty of potential. He started to unlock it at Marseille last season, which convinced Crystal Palace to lure the electrifying forward back to England, and he's since slotted seamlessly into Oliver Glasner's attack-minded set-up.

Sitting in behind Eagles No.9 Jean-Philippe Mateta, Sarr has linked up to great effect with Eberechi Eze, racking up 13 goal contributions in the top flight. Palace have looked more dangerous than ever thanks to Sarr's late runs into the box, and his ability to dribble through defences at rapid speed has been vital in the transition.

Sarr's end product has improved dramatically, as further evidenced by the fact that no other Palace player has created more big chances this term. It seems that Sarr has found his spiritual home, and if he can keep improving at this rate, Glasner's side should be setting their sights on fighting for a European berth in 2025-26.

7Jorgen Strand Larsen (Wolves) – loan

The 2023-24 season was a forgettable one for Celta Vigo, who finished 13th in La Liga for the second time on the bounce, but Jorgen Strand Larsen was the one real bright spark. Wolves bought into Norwegian's talent after seeing him plunder 13 goals in the Spanish top flight, and he's since managed to equal that total in the Premier League with two games still to go.

Matheus Cunha has taken most of the credit for keeping Wolves above the drop zone, but Strand Larsen has only scored two fewer league goals than the Brazilian, and his hold-up play has been exceptional at times. He works as hard as anyone in the team off the ball, too, much to the delight of his manager Vitor Pereira.

The Wolves boss said in April: “My striker must be a fighter. Must be someone who is the first one to start defending and, of course, the responsibility is not only to score goals. He [Strand Larsen] has this spirit and this character, he’s a player that I like the profile of.”

It has been reported that the Molineux club can make Strand Larsen's loan move permanent for £23m ($31m) this summer, which will surely be a priority for Pereira, especially as Cunha continues to be linked with a move to Manchester United.

Rangers already had a bigger talent than Cerny in "electric" loan star

Glasgow Rangers delivered one of their finest away European performances in midweek as they brought a 3-1 advantage over Fenerbahçe back to Ibrox for the second leg.

It could have easily been 5-1, but Cyriel Dessers had two goals ruled out for offside. Despite this, it was a tremendous performance in Turkey.

The Ibrox side came into the game on the back of three back-to-back defeats at home for the first time since 2012. These losses to Queen’s Park, St Mirren and Motherwell saw the Gers score just a single goal.

Not much hope was given to the Glasgow side ahead of the clash against José Mourinho’s side, but fair play to Barry Ferguson as he outmanoeuvred the wily old fox tactically.

Mohamed Diomande and Nicolas Raskin ran the show from the heart of the midfield, being central to everything positive that happened for the Gers, while Leon Balogun was a rock alongside John Souttar at the back.

Even Jack Butland, who has come under some fire of late due to a series of poor displays, largely kept the home side at bay with a few good saves during the match.

It was Vaclav Cerny who shone the most for Ferguson’s side, however, yet again displaying his class on the continental stage.

Vaclav Cerny’s incredible display vs Fenerbahçe.

Prior to the clash, Cerny had scored 15 goals and grabbed seven assists in all competitions for the Gers, proving himself to be an excellent loan signing.

Dessers, Cerny

He tends to save his best football for European competition and this was the case against the Turkish side on Thursday evening.

His two goals were extremely well taken. The first was a left-footed effort following a stunning pass from Dessers, while the Czech winger raced onto a through ball by Raskin to calmly slot home the killer third goal for Rangers.

He also attempted two dribbles and delivered a cross, but his impact in the final third, always looking to get on the end of through balls in order to score and he was duly rewarded against Fenerbahçe.

There have been a few games where he has failed to contribute, but in the big matches, Cerny comes to life and proves his worth.

It is a pity the winger is only on loan, as this type of talent isn’t found too often, that’s for sure. Over the last few seasons, Rangers have had a few players on loan at the club who have shone before going onto bigger and better things.

Malik Tillman starred during the 2022/23 campaign, and now he has 15 goal contributions in all competitions for PSV Eindhoven this season.

Abdallah Sima is another one who performed well for Rangers during his loan spell last season. He shone for Brest in the Champions League earlier this season during his temporary spell with the Ligue 1 side.

Where Are They Now

Could the Light Blues have had a chance of signing him on a permanent deal, however?

Rangers already had a bigger talent than Cerny

Ahead of the 2023/24 season, Michael Beale secured the services of Sima on a loan deal from Brighton and Hove Albion and it didn’t take long for him to prove his worth.

Awkward to play against, the left-winger enjoyed plenty of success in Scotland, eventually going on to score 16 goals and registering two assists for the Gers throughout the entire season, despite missing 18 games due to an injury.

Abdallah Sima

It was a scintillating season, and who knows what the club could have achieved had he been fit for those games? This led to discussions about his future and whether it lay in Glasgow.

After the season finished and Sima returned to his parent club, Clement confirmed that he had been in contact with the player, saying: “I’ve been in touch with him, of course,” Clement says. “He’s like one of my sons. Abda loves the club. Abda loves the way of playing we had last season and his role in that. He loved his teammates and the staff.”

The “electric” star – as dubbed by captain James Tavernier – was valued at around £8m by the south coast side during the summer transfer window, which represented a stumbling block for Clement.

Indeed, he ended up joining Brest on a temporary move until the end of the current season. If he did join permanently, he could have been an even bigger talent than Cerny, without a shadow of a doubt.

What Abdallah Sima has done since leaving Rangers

The left-winger has carried on the form he displayed at Rangers during his time in France. Indeed, across 32 games for the club, Sima has netted eight goals and recorded two assists in all competitions.

It was his form in the Champions League which got people talking. He scored three goals in nine appearances, which included a double against RB Salzburg in the group stage.

Averaging 1.8 shots per game and creating two big chances for his teammates in the competition suggests he wasn’t fazed by the step-up to performing in the biggest club competition in Europe.

It has been yet another successful loan move for the Senegal international. The question is, will this form convince Fabian Hurzeler at Brighton that he deserves a berth in the first-team squad next term?

Abdallah Sima

If he continues to score and perform well, the least he deserves is a chance. Rangers missed the boat last summer. He may have broken the bank, but aged just 23, Sima has plenty of years to reach his peak, which could have seen the Light Blues make a profit on him.

Cerny has stepped up and showcased his class, but a similar situation will occur when he departs this summer, especially as there are likely to be other clubs chasing his signature when the window opens in a few months.

Falling for a loan star. It’s enough to break your heart when they leave.

Better than Cerny: Former Rangers loanee on course to "become a £120m" star

Vaclav Cerny has proven himself to be Rangers’ best player in 2024/25.

Shakib's five-for and Litton's record-breaking fifty give Bangladesh 2-0 lead over Ireland

17 overs a sideShakib Al Hasan had Litton Das for company as Bangladesh dominated Ireland by 77 runs to clinch the T20I series in Chattogram. They led the way in the hosts’ all-round show that provided them their second-biggest win in the format (by runs). Shakib made a quickfire 38 and then took a five-wicket haul while Litton’s 83 and three catches as wicketkeeper made equal impact. Shakib’s second T20I five-for also took him past Tim Southee to become the highest wicket-taker in the format.Openers Litton and Rony Talukdar added 124 runs in 9.2 overs of the rain-shortened match. Litton cracked 83 off 41 balls before Shakib’s show.Ireland looked incomplete in all three departments, hardly stringing together a few good overs. There was a dropped catch, a few crucial misfields and then the batting fell apart in the face of Shakib’s brilliance. Earlier, rain just at the stroke of the start of play had threatened to ruin chances of the game. The first drops of rain on Wednesday afternoon fell ten minutes after the toss. The downpour stopped after 40 minutes, when the umpires declared a 3:15pm start but minutes later, a drizzle began. The 17-overs a side match finally started at 3:40pm, a full 100 minutes after the scheduled start. But it hardly deterred or unnerved the Bangladesh openers who took off from where they left off in the first T20I.

Litton, Rony blast record-breaking start

The fastest team fifty. The fastest individual fifty. The fastest team hundred. The biggest opening stand for the team. Litton and Rony did it all, as they smacked Ireland around the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in a memorable opening stand. It was 9.2 overs of pure entertainment. The pair hit 13 fours and five sixes, breaking several team records, as the Ireland bowlers and fielders were ordinary. Bangladesh raced to 50 in 3.3 overs after Rony and Litton took big overs off Mark Adair and Graham Hume. It was the first time a Bangladesh opening pair had three successive fifty-plus stands.Litton was dropped in the fourth over on 16, with George Dockrell unable to hold on to his bullet of a pull shot. The same over went for 17 runs, before Fionn Hand went for 19 runs in the following over, his first one on tour. Next over, Litton reached his half-century, beating Mohammad Ashraful’s 20-ball fifty from 2007. Bangladesh raced to their 100 in 7.1 overs, only the second century opening stand for the team. When Ben White removed Rony in the tenth over, his 44 came off 23 balls with three fours and two sixes in the arc between long-on and midwicket.Litton struck his three sixes over point, long-off and square-leg. Seven of his ten fours came behind square on either side of the wicket, but the most significant number was the eight dot balls he played in his 41-ball stay. It is the lowest by a Bangladeshi batter in a 75-plus knock. Litton’s innings however ended tamely when he edged legspinner White in the twelfth over, following a mild lull in the run-rate.Litton Das reached his fifty in 18 balls•AFP/Getty Images

Shakib, Hridoy pound the Irish

But that lull didn’t last for too long. As soon as Shakib slammed Harry Tector for a four and a six in the 13th over, Bangladesh’s run-rate soared again. They also reached their fastest 150 team total in T20Is. Soon afterwards, Hridoy backhanded Hume for his first six over long-on. Shakib deposited Adair’s poor slower ball over square-leg.The pair struck a couple of more blows to take the total close to 200 before Hridoy got out. It was a quick 61-run third wicket stand, helping Bangladesh to consecutive 200-plus totals in the series.

Shakib five-for sinks Ireland

Bangladesh started the Ireland chase with a wicket first ball. Taskin Ahmed removed the dangerous Paul Stirling as Litton held a fine catch diving to his right. It is the second time Taskin took a wicket off the first ball of a T20I innings. From the second over onwards though, it was the Shakib show. With his first ball, Lorcan Tucker mildly swept him to Rony at square-leg, falling for six.In his second over, Shakib zoomed in his arm-ball into Adair’s pads, deflecting on to his leg-stump. Last ball of the over, Delany was caught behind for six. He took two more wickets in the sixth over after which Tector missed a swipe on 22 to become Shakib’s fifth scalp. He became the first cricketer to take a five-for and score 30-plus runs in a T20I twice in his career. Shakib’s five-for is also the fourth time a bowler took five wickets in the first six overs of a T20I innings, emulating Lasith Malinga, Fred Klaassen and Oshane Thomas.

Campher’s spark not enough

Ireland were sinking after Shakib had reduced them to 43 for 6. But there was some life left in Curtis Campher who did the rest of the scoring mostly on his own. He struck three sixes and as many fours in his 29-ball 50, before Taskin cleaned up his stumps in the 15th. Campher had just earlier reached his fifty with two sixes off Taskin with two ramps. Ireland needed a few more innings of that quality on the night, which they lacked, and went down by 77.

Nottingham Forest plotting offer to sign "exciting" star club chiefs love

With the summer transfer window approaching, Nottingham Forest have now reportedly set their sights on a defensive addition who’s been back to his best form this season.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

Those in the City Ground boardroom will be keen for the summer transfer window to arrive perhaps just to put their potential Champions League status to the test. As things stand, Forest still sit as high as third in the Premier League and on course to seal the shock of the season by qualifying for Europe’s elite competition. And that should open several new doors for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

A number of potential additions have already threatened to steal the headlines on that front too, from Bright Osayi-Samuel all the way to Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi, and it looks as though the Reds are ready to be bold when the summer arrives.

Leeds United target Bright Osayi-Samuel in action for Fenerbahce.

Of course, the aim should be to maintain their surprise Champions League place and welcome reinforcements in search of a permanent top four place. Whether that comes through signing the likes of Frattesi remains to be seen, however. Instead, before anything, those in the Midlands could turn towards a defensive addition.

According to TeamTalk, Nottingham Forest are now plotting an opening bid to sign Hugo Bueno from Wolverhampton Wanderers, but face competition from Championship promotion contenders Leeds United.

The left-back has enjoyed a much-improved campaign on loan at Feyenoord, attracting plenty of interest as a result and the admiration of those higher up at the City Ground. Now, Wolves could cash in as Nottingham Forest look to benefit from signing another rival star.

If those in the Midlands cast their minds back, it wasn’t so long ago that they were welcoming Morgan Gibbs-White from Wolves and if Bueno completes a similar move before enjoying a similar rise then Forest are in for quite the treat this summer.

"Exciting" Bueno could earn Premier League redemption

In a race to become Wolves’ main man down the left-hand side, it was ultimately Rayan Ait-Nouri who came out on top as Bueno was forced to seek a starting spot out on loan. Just one season later, whilst no one is doubting Ait-Nouri’s own ability, Bueno has gone on to steal headlines of his own and could come back to haunt his parent club next season.

Whether Wolves sell to Nottingham Forest once again will certainly be interesting to see, especially given that they’d be selling a player who Matt Hobbs has had plenty of praise for.

The Wolves sporting director told the club’s official website when asked about Ait-Nouri and Bueno in 2023: “It’s interesting because we are blessed in that area of the pitch. We’ve got two young, exciting left-backs/left wing-backs, who are slightly different, but both have huge talent, so it’s a nice little battle between them.

“Hugo played a lot last year, Rayan has started this season exceptionally well and has kept his shirt through his performance. It’s good for them that they’re competing against each other, they’re really close as well, so it’s a healthy competition, and we will see the benefits of that from both of their performances.”

Du Plessis: 'Disappointed with the lack of runs in last five overs'

RCB’s captain admits that his team was “at least 20 runs” short of a challenging total

ESPNcricinfo staff09-May-2023Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Faf du Plessis has admitted to being disappointed with the lack of runs from his team in the last five overs at the Wankhede after Mumbai Indians chased down a 200-run target on a canter.Du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell added 120 runs in just 62 deliveries for the third wicket and laid the platform for a big finish. But after Maxwell fell to Jason Behrendorff in the 13th over, Mahipal Lomror and du Plessis also followed suit in the next ten deliveries and Royal Challengers could add just 53 runs in the last 35 balls.”At least 20 [runs],” du Plessis told the broadcaster when asked how short his team were from a potentially winning score.Related

Mumbai mow down 200 to jump from eighth to third

“I think in the context of the wickets so far this season it feels like anything under 220 with Mumbai’s powerful batting line-up, and obviously they are a strong chasing team and bat very deep,” du Plessis said. “So we were very disappointed.””I think we didn’t capitalise in those last five overs. That’s when on a wicket like this you can really do some damage. So disappointed with the last five overs and the lack of runs.”Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, praised quick bowler Akash Madhwal for his execution at the death. Bowling to Wanindu Hasaranga and Kedar Jadhav, Madhwal conceded just six runs in the final over.”He [Madhwal] was with us last year as well and we saw the skillset he brings. All we wanted to do was give him that specific role so he focuses on that and we told him this is what you have to do,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.”I know these are tough overs to bowl but he’s quite confident. When I speak to him, the responses that I get, he is quite confident. He is a leader as well. He leads his Uttarakhand team. So he has got a lot of knowledge about how he wants to bowl, what sort of field placements he wants to have.”Rohit also said that Royal Challengers looked set for a score in the region of 220 and praised his team for reining things back in the last few overs, something which the team has struggled with this season.”It was crucial what we did there at the back end. Restricting them to less than 200 was a great effort,” Rohit said. “At one stage it was looking 220 or something like that and the way we have bowled in the last part, it could have been 220 or maybe more.”2:04

Dasgupta: Haven’t seen someone with Suryakumar’s wrist-work in modern-day cricket

Du Plessis: ‘Suryakumar makes a captain extremely grey’In the chase, Ishan Kishan got Mumbai Indians off to a blinder as he smashed his way to 42 off 21 deliveries. But Hasaranga had him caught behind and then trapped Rohit lbw in the fifth over. However, Suryakumar Yadav, with Nehal Wadhera for company, dispelled any chances of a Royal Challengers comeback with a 35-ball 83.Suryakumar hit six sixes and seven fours to help Mumbai complete the chase in 16.3 overs — the quickest that a target of 200 or more has been chased down in the IPL.”He [Suryakumar] is one of the best isn’t he? When he gets going, he’s really difficult to bowl to,” du Plessis said.”He makes a captain extremely grey because he’s got so many options. You don’t feel like you can really shut him down,” he said. “That’s why I said he is one of the greats at the moment.”
