Johan Botha appointed new Brisbane Heat and Queensland coach

Former South Africa limited-overs captain Johan Botha has been appointed as the new head coach of BBL reigning champions Brisbane Heat and Queensland in state cricket for the next three years.Botha, 42, was appointed in the wake of Wade Seccombe’s departure. He has previous head coach experience in the PSL, CPL and ILT20. Queensland WNCL and Brisbane Heat women’s coach Ashley Noffke and former England allrounder Adam Hollioake were also in the mix for the job.Related

Speaking in Brisbane on Tuesday following his appointment, Botha said he already had a few existing relationships with Queensland and Heat players. He had played with Michael Neser at Adelaide Strikers and coached Colin Munro in the PSL but had also played against a lot of the players in his career. He said his experience of coaching Usman Khawaja at Islamabad United should give the players a sense that his style is different to his approach as a player.”I think chatting to him [Khawaja] during PSL and post PSL he just said to me, he was so surprised at how different I was as a coach to a player,” Botha said. “I think he’s had a little taste of me. Hopefully, he’s spread that to the group that what you played against is a little bit different, which I think is a good thing.”Botha is an Australian citizen after moving to Adelaide in 2012 to play full-time for South Australia which effectively ended his international career with South Africa after he had played five Tests, 78 ODIs and 40 T20Is, including captaining his country in 21 white-ball matches. He captained South Australia in the Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup for two years before resigning midway through the 2014-15 season to allow Travis Head to take over. Botha also has extensive playing experience in the BBL having played 71 matches with Adelaide Strikers, Sydney Sixers and Hobart Hurricanes. He retired abruptly in 2019 to take up a coaching opportunity in the PSL but came out of retirement as a fill-in during the Covid-ravaged season of 2020-21.Botha has accrued extensive coaching experience around the world in recent years. He has been head coach of three PSL sides, Multan Sultans, Karachi Kings and Islamabad United. He also coached Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL and led them to the final in 2019 with a unique spin-heavy team.He was the head coach of Sharjah Warriors in the ILT20 last season, although they finished last, and was assistant coach of Seattle Orcas in MLC when they finished runners-up last year. He was also an assistant coach with Strikers in the BBL as recently as 2022-23.Johan Botha captained South Africa 21 times•Getty Images

Botha credited the late Australian great Dean Jones and Tom Moody as key coaching mentors during his early forays into coaching.”I think the big thing with Deano was he was so far ahead of his generation,” he said. “He understood T20 cricket. He never played it but he just understood it. And he was great for just relating to players.”He almost did a Phil Jackson-Dennis Rodman scenario once. He let Alex Hales go back to Dubai for five days. And I said, ‘Deano what are you doing? He’s never going to come back.’ But he said, ‘Just trust me, he will come back, and he will make some runs.’ And that’s exactly what he did. So that was a great example to trust your players. And I’m not sure if I could have done it at that point. But I trusted him, he was the man in charge, and sure enough, Halesy came back and he made some runs for us.”The coaching recruitment process was run by Queensland’s head of elite cricket Joe Dawes, CEO Terry Svenson and Queensland board director and former Test wicketkeeper Ian Healy. It is understood Dawes and the Queensland Cricket Board were looking for a coach with a harder edge and they feel they have found that person in Botha.”Johan is a fiercely motivated and determined person and has consistently displayed those traits during his playing and coaching career,” Dawes said. “He is very much at the cutting edge of the game internationally and will bring a fresh and dynamic outlook to our organisation and especially the Bulls and championship Brisbane Heat squads.”Botha acknowledged his biggest challenge will be coaching the Shield side given all of his coaching experience has come in the T20 space. “I’ve played a lot of four-day and one-day cricket but I haven’t coached it,” he said. “So I think that’s going to be a little bit of a challenge to start with.”

Ice cold: Why Harry Kane does not wear long sleeves, gloves as England star braves conditions in freezing temperatures

Harry Kane has explained why he does not wear long sleeves and gloves even when playing conditions for Bayern Munich and England are freezing.

Prolific frontman all about scoring goalsThat is his only concern on the fieldHas grown accustomed to braving elementsFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The sight of players wrapping up against the elements has become increasingly common in modern football, with many taking to wearing base layers even when the air temperature could be considered relatively mild.

Others like to keep their hands warm despite wearing a short-sleeved shirt, while snoods were briefly a thing before getting banned. Kane has, throughout his record-breaking career, steered well clear of such attire.

DID YOU KNOW?

He could be considered quite old school in his approach, as a throwback No.9 whose entire game is based around the ability to score goals, and the 32-year-old frontman is not about to change his ways.

Kane has told his channel when asked about his decision to keep arms and hands exposed: “It’s just something I’ve done from a young age and have just stuck with it throughout my whole career.

“When you are out there playing, you are kind of warm anyway. Sometimes in the warm-up or just after we come back out from half-time it’s pretty cold – especially here in Germany, the winter is really cold and snowy – but I’m just used to it now and it’s something I have done for many years.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Not much has gone right for Newcastle this summer. Star striker Alexander Isak wants to leave, Manchester United seem primed to beat them to Benjamin Sesko's signature, and long-term goalkeeper target James Trafford joined Manchester City instead of them, too. If they could sign McGinn, that would be a quality and experienced signing for Newcastle as they try to find some positives from this off-season.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The report adds that the Scotland international 'could be available' this window, with the former Hibernian man currently having two years left on his contract. Villa have already rebuffed interest from Everton, so Newcastle may have their work cut out to sign McGinn – who joined the Villans in 2018 – this summer.

'Hope it's not too much too soon' – Former USMNT star Freddy Adu says Cavan Sullivan well-positioned with Philadelphia Union and Man City, warns against 'overwhelming' teen

GOAL Convo: Adu discussed his expectations for Sullivan and the state of the American youth soccer system

Freddy Adu might not have grown up in the social media era, but if there was a 2004 equivalent of “going viral,” he lived it.

Joining MLS at 14, he became the face of a league desperate to attract fans. Commercials with Pelé? Check. Mega endorsement deals? Absolutely. Pushing for senior-team minutes as a teen? Whatever it took to market a still-developing talent once linked to Manchester United and Tottenham before signing with D.C. United.

Adu says American soccer is in a much better place now than when he launched his career.

"There's a big change," Adu told GOAL. "When I was coming up, the whole youth system was new; it wasn't as big. There weren’t a lot of resources, so your pathway was either the youth national team or college. That’s how most people went pro. Now, there’s money in the youth systems, more opportunities – and that’s great for young players."

While Adu is remembered by many as a player who didn’t match outsized expectations, his career spanned more than a decade with stops at clubs such as Benfica and Monaco. The improved infrastructure in MLS gives him hope for another hyped teenager, Cavan Sullivan. The 15-year-old Philadelphia Union prospect is very much viral – he posted a highlight reel on TikTok this week that drew more than 570,000 likes in just three days.

Adu spoke with GOAL, via the home of football odds, about his expectations for Sullivan, soccer in America and how the U.S. youth system stacks up against England’s in the latest GOAL Convo, a recurring Q&A with central figures in the American game.

    ON CAVAN SULLIVAN

GOAL: The player who is obviously getting a lot of comparisons to you is Cavan Sullivan. What are your thoughts on what's been thrown at Cavan, given your own experiences. When does it become too much, too soon?

ADU: Cavan’s a great player, and for me, I just hope it's not too much too soon, because sometimes it can get overwhelming with a lot on your plate as a young player. I thought the Philadelphia Union and MLS, in particular, were doing a great job with him, because he was brought into the first team in Philly and playing all the time. I think they took their time with him. Then he was with their youth team, and then he was playing with their reserve team for a little while, then they would bring him in and play a game or two, and then he was getting a lot of games with the reserve team.

I think that was good for him. That's good for you as a young player, to still know that you have a lot of work to do before you get into that first team and become a regular starter and a regular contributor. As far as him going over to Manchester City? He's 15 now, and him going to Manchester City at this age, he's going to be in their youth system – I think that's a great idea, because I think he needs to be in that environment.

He needs to sort of grow up as a person and as a player in that environment, so he knows how it is, what to expect, all the grind that it's going to take to get to that next level. Players, when we're here in America, it's very different from what it is over there. Because over there, you are treated when you're in that youth system, and you abide by everything that goes on in that youth system and in that club.

  • IMAGN

    ON SULLIVAN'S DEVELOPMENT

GOAL: Is it more lenient in the U.S.? Is that a good thing for Cavan?

ADU: I've seen both sides of it, and I think that we're a little bit more sort of lenient here, yes. I think young players need to be in a really competitive environment where they have to grind and work for everything, because once you get that instilled in you as a young player, that's what's going to carry you. It's really going to fuel you and help you, help bring out

GOAL: Is there anything different he could have done?

ADU: I don't know his whole journey. I just know you know where he's at. He was in the youth system, and he got noticed, and he was so good that Manchester City even noticed him, and they basically signed him to a futures contract. What I'm saying is sometimes – and not just particularly with Cavan Sullivan – sometimes there are instances where players are sort of propped up too early, and they sort of forget, like they don't necessarily earn it. Put it that way. You forget what got you to where you were.

I think being in that environment for longer, having to grind for it for longer, and earn it, that when you get a chance to get to that first team, you are ready, you are motivated, and you are ready to go right away. Not when you get a chance to get to the first team, it takes you two to three years before you get into it.

  • ON THE AMERICAN YOUTH SOCCER SYSTEM

GOAL: Have you seen a difference in over the last two decades within the American soccer system, from the way you were developed to how they're developing talented youngsters now?

ADU: There are MLS youth teams that obviously play in MLS Next – they play against clubs that are not affiliated with any MLS teams. I'll use a club that's close by me, for example: there is a club in Columbia where I do my sessions in Maryland, called Baltimore Armour. So Baltimore Armour is not affiliated with any MLS teams, yet that club plays in MLS next, and they play in tournaments and games against the youth teams of MLS clubs. Now here's the difference – the problem is still these kids are paying, they are paying to be on those teams.

I hope that we get to a point where the clubs are paying for all the youth teams. So these kids don't have to be out of pocket to get a chance to be seen, or to get a chance to play at the highest level and get better as players. I think this is where, in this country, we need to sort of take the next step in order to improve drastically as a football nation. Because in other countries, all their best players are in those countries, are the sort of kids that say "This is my way out of poverty" or whatever. And this motivates them. If those same kids are here whose parents can't afford to pay for them to play at the highest level, we're missing out on so many great players who would otherwise get a chance to play.

ON DIFFERENCES BETWEEN U.S. AND UK

GOAL: Certainly in the UK, football has always been the working-class sport, and the U.S. seems to be treating it as system of privilege? Is that correct?

ADU: Yeah, exactly. It's the one thing for me when I started working with and coaching the kids, that's when I really started noticing. I'm not coaching any teams or anything because I don’t want to get into that. I just want to help these kids improve as players, and that's why I do these sessions rather than coaching a team, because I personally think that we have a long way to go. And they're paying a lot of money. I mean, some people are paying $2,000 or $3,000 to play for a season. Then on top of that, your parents have to pay for you when you go on tournaments, they have to pay out of pocket for the travel, they have to get a hotel room, and all that stuff. So that's a lot of it, and it all adds up, so it's difficult for a lot of these kids.

I do think we've missed out on a lot of great players. I got lucky. I'm going to be perfectly honest with you, I got lucky because there was no way my mom was able to afford for me to play in a youth system. I got lucky to get noticed in elementary school… We played in a tournament, and the team wasn't that good. I literally scored all the goals for them in the tournament. At that point, I got noticed by a different team, a different coach of a different team, who was like, 'That kid is way too good to be playing with that team.' So, they gave me a scholarship to come play on their team, which was at a much higher level. And a lot of people don't have that. They don't get that opportunity.

Winners and losers of Arsenal's preseason: Teenage wonderkid Max Dowman is ready now – but Gunners still need another attacker to end title drought

Mikel Arteta's side won three of their five matches this summer as they prepare for another season hunting down England and Europe's best

Arsenal are heading into the 2025-26 season full of hope and optimism that they will finally end their trophy drought. Despite taking huge strides in the Mikel Arteta era, the men's team's last piece of silverware came back in the summer of 2020, when they won the FA Cup during the coronavirus lockdown – that remains the only major honour claimed since Arsene Wenger left in 2018.

Their preparations for the new campaign haven't been perfect, but there is evident progress nonetheless. After beating AC Milan and Newcastle in Singapore, the mood was dampened a tad by a defeat to Tottenham in Hong Kong during the first north London derby on foreign soil. Arteta's charges returned to England for two last friendlies at the Emirates Stadium, and when they were beaten by Villarreal, fan sentiment began to wobble. However, a convincing, and at times scintillating, demolition of Athletic Club on Saturday lifted spirits again, particularly with marquee signing Viktor Gyokeres scoring his first goal since arriving from Sporting CP.

The Gunners' time for warm-ups and kick-abouts is over, with a tricky start to the new term rapidly peering over the horizon. Are they ready? Can they start fast and right the wrongs of last year?

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Arsenal's pre-season…

Getty ImagesWINNER: Max Dowman

Yes, you heard it correctly. Max Dowman is only 15 years old, and doesn't even turn 16 until New Year's Eve, yet he has not looked one iota out of place in the Arsenal first-team setup this pre-season. If you'd asked someone who didn't know to guess Dowman's age based on these summer performances, they'd have said a man in his early twenties with plenty of top-flight experience under his belt, rather than a literal child who still has GCSEs to complete.

The Gunners' esteemed Hale End academy have done it again, producing another top teenage talent ready to get some minutes in the adult game. Throughout pre-season, Arteta has afforded Dowman a real chance to impress and an opportunity to make the leap from youth football. He's been thrown in at the deep end and is treading water swimmingly.

In the friendlies against Newcastle and Villarreal, Dowman came off the bench to bamboozle the opposition defence and win penalties. He was seldom afraid to put crosses into the box or pull the trigger with shots of his own. Some rookies may have wilted in the spotlight and chose to play more safely, but Dowman has instead opted to take games by the scruff of the neck.

After his cameo against Villarreal, Arteta said of Dowman: "He continues to impress, without a doubt. The impact he had in the game again today, the efficiency that he shows in every attack and action, it's incredible. Again, he deserves to have chances, and if he continues like this, let's see what happens."

It is practically unheard of for any club at any level, let alone one with the prestige and ambitions of Arsenal, to blood a 15-year-old into the senior side, so what's Arteta's plan for the months ahead? "Let's see how it goes… He needs a little break because he hasn't had any holidays really. So, in the next few days, he's going to have a break, which I think he needs. And then, following the week, he'll be ready again to go."

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Gabriel Martinelli & Leandro Trossard

Arsenal's left wing spot remains up for grabs, and no one has made a convincing enough play to nail it down for themselves. The club are still being linked with moves for the likes of Eberechi Eze, Rodrygo and Ademola Lookman, suggesting Arteta is still looking for an external solution to this problem.

Their current options have stagnated one way or another. Gabriel Martinelli, who only turned 24 in June, has not kicked on as has long been expected of him, remaining a frustrating presence when on the pitch. Meanwhile, 30-year-old Leandro Trossard missed most of Arsenal's friendlies through injury and could start the season with a considerable amount of rust to shake off.

The arrival of Noni Madueke means that even if the Gunners don't make another major signing in attack, Arteta still has another new option to try out. Madueke ended the 2024-25 season starting off the left for Chelsea as opposed to his preferred right, and though this didn't yield a goal, he still made the Blues a more direct threat on that flank, particularly in transition.

Madueke has also impressed Arteta with his early commitment to the cause, returning early from his post-Club World Cup holiday to link up with his new team-mates. Speaking after Saturday's match with Athletic Club, the Spaniard said: "I think the reception [Madueke] got every time he was on the ball the other day as well, super positive, I think that lifts any player, brings energy. You can tell the quality that he's got every time he's on the ball, in and around the box on one-v-one, the ball lands obviously to a player in our colour inside the box and that's a massive quality to have. He can play left and right, he doesn't care, so he's a big weapon for us."

Getty ImagesWINNER: New-look midfield

Speaking of directness, there appears to be an emphasis on Arsenal progressing the ball up the pitch with more purpose than over the last 12 months. Bringing in Martin Zubimendi, an accomplished deep-lying playmaker who can pass vertically as well as sideways, will certainly help with that tactical adjustment. Together with Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, he could form part of the Premier League's best, if not most well-rounded, midfield trio.

"With the qualities that they have and the way they can complement each other in that space, we saw another evolution today on that and things that the team can really benefit from to be much more unpredictable and be a much more threat, especially from these inside positions," Arteta said on Saturday of the threesome.

Zubimendi, on his part, has also praised his team-mates for helping him settle so seamlessly: "It was very easy – the team made it very easy for me. I think the rest of the team have integrated very well, I think the people on and off the pitch are very friendly. [Rice and Odegaard] are top players, the best in their position. It's time to learn, adapt and enjoy it above all."

It's this sort of differential, along with not enduring an injury crisis spanning the whole campaign, that Arsenal will need if they're to overthrow Liverpool and become the kings of England themselves, not just what happens in both boxes.

Getty Images SportLOSER: Jakub Kiwior

When Gabriel Magalhaes' 2024-25 ended in early April due to a hamstring injury, many Arsenal fans were worried about the credentials of Jakub Kiwior to take his place. However, the Poland international produced a number of fine showings, including in both legs of their Champions League quarter-final triumph against Real Madrid, to finally endear himself to supporters.

Gabriel picked up another injury towards the start of pre-season to allow Kiwior further minutes alongside William Saliba in the heart of defence this summer, though he has regularly been caught napping at the back and his levels have dropped. He notably caught the ire of David Raya after reacting slowly to the first two goals they conceded at home to Villarreal last Wednesday.

Riccardo Calafiori is most likely going to compete with Myles Lewis-Skelly for the left-back spot, but he may also fill in at centre-back on that side too. With Kiwior still linked with an exit, Arsenal may be contemplating selling while his stock to the rest of Europe is still relatively high and his time in north London may be drawing to a close.

Holder, Seales back as West Indies name 15-member squad for England Tests

Uncapped opening batter Mikyle Louis is part of the travelling side which includes Isai Thorne as development player

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jun-2024West Indies have named Jason Holder and Jayden Seales in their 15-man squad to face England in a three-match Test series next month, after they both missed the drawn series in Australia this January. At the time, Holder had instead opted to play for Dubai Capitals in the ILT20, but has won a recall after demonstrating his red-ball form for Barbados and Worcestershire this year. He was recently ruled out of the ongoing T20 World Cup with an unspecified injury, but is expected to recover in time to feature against England even as his previous Test had come last July.Seales, meanwhile, was unavailable for the Australia tour due to a shoulder injury, but has already enjoyed success in England this summer. He has been playing for Sussex, and is the joint-highest wicket-taker in Division Two of the County Championship.Related
